Part of our ‘Meet the Resident Makers’ series
My name is Julie and i am a self taught Mosaic Artist. My love of Mosaics all began about 17 years ago… I saw some Mosaics whilst on Holiday in Greece one summer and couldn’t get the idea of having a go myself out of my mind. I decided to make something for the garden initially; Someone gave me an old concrete animal trough and I decided to make my first Mosaic! Needless to say, I was hooked…after having a few more attempts, friends asked me to make for them.
One day, a few years later, after much practice, I decided to order some glass from a Mosaic supplier; Suddenly, I was seeing the world differently. Almost anything, I realised could be used in a Mosaic design.
After a year or so, experimenting with glass, fossils, slate, ceramic, I decided to see if I could sell my work in gallery….I must admit, I felt incredibly nervous, as although I was pleased with my own work, I wasn’t quite sure what other folks would think.
Anyway, the gallery accepted my work and it sold almost straight away…i couldn’t believe it! I was off…I had my work in a few different galleries local to me and started to do Art events around the UK, mostly within a 2 to 3 hour radius of home.
I loved and still do love doing these Art events as it’s an opportunity to meet new folks and get some feedback on my work too; and of course a few sales is always good. I look at my weekends doing Art Events as a weekend away and earning a little too.
I was trained in Floristry and Horticulture after leaving school, many moons ago…and have had a lovely career in Floristry for many years; However, Mosaics is where my heart lies these days and my Floristry and love of flowers, colour and texture is very evident in my work. I always get excited when starting a new piece.
I find myself totally engrossed in my work and love what I do.
Mosaics are an ancient Art form and I have a modern twist with my designs and use of materials.
I love the outdoors and nature and love running on the fells in the Lake District. I think if it was possible, I could live on the Hill side and be quite happy!
I am so thrilled to be a part of The Makers Mill in Keswick and feel very lucky to have my studio there in such a creative space with other fantastic makers beside me. I look forward to meeting lots of folks whilst in my studio creating.
I will be running a Floristry work shop and a Mosaic workshop at the Makers Mill this year, so, if you fancy getting creative and having a go, just book on to one of my workshops and come along and have some fun creating!
