Part of our ‘Meet the Resident Makers’ series
My name is Sophie and I am a self-confessed knitting enthusiast. This all began when I started a new job as an electronic engineer (I know stark contrast to knitting!) and a lovely lady called Lesley offered to teach me how to make little booties for my friends’ baby in our lunch breaks. It’s safe to say I haven’t stopped knitting since, my friends and family can vouch for that one! I don’t know how I ever got through a long journey before I had a hat to knit on the way.
This ability to relax yet be productive is actually one of the things I love the most about knitting; you can take it anywhere, although you have to be open to a few funny looks!
About 18 months ago I decided I was going to try and take my knitting to the next level. I had been working on a number of my own hat patterns and felt ready to start selling them and teach others how to make them. This was the start of SEW Design – I definitely lucked out with my initials there!
The process of developing these patterns made me realise the second thing I love about knitting, the ability to re-use the wool over and over. I really hate to waste things so the ability to make something, take it apart, develop it, learn from it and all from a single ball of wool was fantastic! If not a bit frustrating at times, there were definitely a few interesting hats along the way! Thanks must be given here to my ever loving family who have graciously accepted all of my knitted presents (prototypes) over the last few Christmases!
Knitting is so much more than old fashioned cardigans and socks; it is a relaxing fun way to create your own accessories and home wear. It can be a wonderful way to keep busy and detach when things are a bit stressful, it’s portable and challenging and I don’t know what I’d do without it!
I am so excited to be a part of the Makers Mill; this space is truly going to give me the opportunity to share with others my love of knitting. I am so looking forward to learning from other makers and am especially excited to do some knitting inspired upholstery collaborations with MOS bespoke furniture, the resident furniture maker. Watch this space!
If this has made you think, you know what I want to give that a try! I am running a number of knitting workshops at the Makers Mill in the next few months, come along and see what it’s all about!
