We are very excited to invite you to join Emma Redfern of Hole House for a TWO FULL DAYS of sewing to create a backpack.
This is a fun extension of the ‘frame bag’, using many of the same techniques but adding a few elements and replacing the leather handles with adjustable backpack straps. It’s not a bag for beginners, but is designed to stretch those who have previously made the frame bag and want to try something a bit more advanced.
The bag is constructed in sections, which gives great scope for mixing up fabrics. The examples in the photos show how it can be made with an oilskin base and tweed upper, but you could just as easily try a tweed base and canvas upper, or all tweed … it’s a bag that allows you to play around a bit with your combinations.
You will need to bring outer fabric – half a metre of base fabric plus another metre of outer fabric (or half a metre of two different ones) plus 1.5m of lining fabric. This will be enough fabric to allow for as many pockets as we have time to include! You will probably have fabric left over. All other materials, including interfacing, interlining, frame, strap hardware and zips, will be provided.
Students will be provided with full instructions and a pattern to take away, as well as all specialist materials needed – students will need to bring their own fabric, sewing machine, scissors, pins and matching thread.
This class is suitable for those who can confidently use their sewing machine, but does not require any advanced sewing skills as each step will be fully explained in an informal and relaxed way.
Students are required to bring:
– A sewing machine in good working order
– half a metre of base fabric
– one metre of outer fabric (or half a metre of two different ones)
– 1.5 metre of a lining fabric (quilt weight, lawn etc)
– Matching thread
Please note there is a £35 material charge payable to the tutor on the day.
