We are excited to add a new 6 week evening pottery series to our workshop calendar for 2022 with our resident potter Michelle Best.

This evening series will run on the following consecutive weeks:

Thursday 15th September: 6:00pm – 8:30pm (Week 1)
Thursday 22nd September: 6:00pm – 8:30pm (Week 2)
Thursday 29th September: 6:00pm – 8:30pm (Week 3)
Thursday 6th October: 6:00pm – 8:30pm (Week 4)
Thursday 13th October: 6:00pm – 8:30pm (Week 5)
Thursday 20th October: 6:00pm – 8:30pm (Week 6)

This six-week course is for beginners and people with intermediate knowledge of throwing on the wheel and wishes to learn new techniques or keep practicing with newly found skills.

The first week we will discuss your expectations and any projects you would like to focus on i.e. lidded pots, plates, bowls, mugs.

Week two and three will be continuing with throwing and week four/five will be trimming your pots and adding handles, if necessary.

Then Michelle will Bisque fire your pots and on week six we will talk about the chemistry of glazing followed by waxing and glazing your pottery using our in-house glazes.

Your final pieces will then be fired by Michelle and ready for collection at a later date.

The workshop is for six people and is suitable for beginners and intermediate level. We have three pottery wheels that you will take in turn to practice your throwing. When not on the pottery wheel we can practice wedging clay and handbuilding.

Due to the limited size of the kiln, plates and large bowls will be restricted to one each per person and a maximum of six items in total.

Throwing on the wheel can be messy so wear old clothes and tie long hair back. Aprons will be provided.

This course is for over 16’s only.

Michelle is also running pottery workshops on the following dates:

  • Michelle Best
    Ceramicist

Michelle has been a Makers Mill resident artist since 2020.

Experimenting with glazing is an enjoyable challenge and using my own kiln is a practice in patience for not trying to open it too soon.

The joy and frustration of throwing clay on the wheel is all-consuming and I love it.
