New for 2026, this lantern making workshop with Kate from North Lakes Stained Glass is perfect for both beginners and those who have attended previous glass sessions, who would like to try a slightly bigger and different challenge. These lanterns make a stunning addition to any home, or a wonderful gift and can be used indoors or out.
During this full day workshop, Kate will talk you through and demonstrate the process of the tiffany foiling method step-by-step to create 4 small identical panels to fit inside the provided metal lantern frame. There will be a selection of simple designs to choose from on the day, ranging from classical Victorian and Art Deco styles, geometric patterns through to landscapes and sunsets. Alternatively, why not bring along some ideas on the day to discuss with Kate when you arrive? Please note, the photos below show example of Kate’s work, and do not represent the exact patterns we will be completing on the day, although will be used for inspiration!
Starting with an introduction to different types of glass and design, we’ll cover how to handle and work with glass safely, before practicing cutting and shaping individual pieces of clear glass. Once you feel comfortable with this skill, you can then go on to deciding on your pattern and selecting from the wide variety of textured and coloured glass available on the day and starting to create your panels! There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions, and due to the small group size, everyone will be able to work at their own pace and have their own equipment, so no waiting in line!
In the second half of the day, we will cover soldering and assembly, so that at the end of the day you are able to take home your fully finished piece.
All tools, materials and safety equipment will be supplied. However, due to the nature of the craft, please can you ensure you are wearing closed shoes (no sandals, crocs or sling-backs) and that long hair is tied back. If you wear reading glasses, it is also advisable to bring these for the close detail work!! As the soldering process does involve lead based products, it is not advisable for pregnant women to attend and children between the ages of 16 & 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
In addition, due to health and safety precautions, food and drink isn’t allowed at your individual work stations. However, if you would like to have a drink at your desk during the session, please make sure you bring a sealed/covered reusable drinks bottle with you.
Please note there is a material cost of £45 payable to the tutor on the day
Included in the cost of your workshop is lunch, tea and coffee for the duration and afternoon cake.

A little about Kate from North Lakes Stained Glass:
Kate is a professional glass artist with over 30 years of experience working with both the tiffany and leadlight techniques of stained glass. She moved to Cumbria 5 years ago, and was so inspired by the beauty and heritage of the county that she then set up her company North Lakes Stained Glass, and now sells her landscape and nature work online nationally and internationally, as well as at craft fairs and a number of art galleries around the region, including our own. Her workshop is based here in Keswick, and she recently appeared as one of the featured artists on the BBC TV show ‘Make It At Market’ that aired in the Autumn of 2024.
