How to Paint Mountains Day Workshop with Hamish McLain
Date
- 09 May 2026
- Expired!
Time
- 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Price
- £88.50
Join local artist Hamish McLain for a day of painting mountains inspired by the Lake District Fells, on our
doorstep at The Makers Mill.
The textures, colours and forms of the mountains will be our launching off point, as we create imaginative
responses to the fells, capturing their drama and beauty in paint.
Hamish will take you step by step through the process of painting mountains, from initial sketches, to
laying down washes and building up thicker layers of paint. Finishing up with a final painting that you can
take home.
The workshops will include a simple sketching session outside Makers Mill, to get us inspired by the
landscape and provide us with preliminary sketches to base our paintings on.
You will experiment with a variety of techniques, from brushes and palette knives to more alternative mark
making tools, allowing for a range of interpretations of the fells, both recognisable or more expressive and
abstract.
All the while Hamish will be hand with practical demonstrations and friendly advice, in a fun and accessible
workshop suitable for both beginners and those with prior painting experience.
Please wear clothes you wouldn’t mind getting a bit of paint on, though aprons are provided.
Hamish is local artist and draws inspiration from his surroundings, exploring how the Cumbrian landscape
can inspire the mark making and compositions of his paintings. He gained an MA Fine Art from Chelsea
College of Art in 2013 and was nominated for artist of the year at Rheged, 2016. In November 2019 he was
artist in residence at Makers Mill, Keswick.
Please note there is a material cost of £25 payable to the tutor on the day.
Included in the cost of the workshop is Lunch, tea and coffee throughout the day and afternoon cake.

Hamish McLain’s practice explores the intersection between drawing and painting, investigating how a graphical sensibility can interact within the world of abstraction. In recent work he has been focusing on how the rural landscape of Cumbria can inspire his painting, connecting the dramatic scenery of the area with the language of abstraction.
Purchase our Gift Vouchers and they can use them on any of our workshops or gallery items.
