This new and exciting course for 2026 brings an opportunity to learn how stained glass artists use trace painting and sgraffito to embellish and decorate their stained glass windows; techniques that have changed little since Medieval times.
With many years of experience designing and making Stained Glass, Tutor Nikki Clark will demonstrate how glass paint is carefully prepared before being painted onto glass using specialist brushes, a light source, and a bridge, and show how secondary shading and other techniques can create depth and interest to a piece. After choosing a design you will then start trace painting for yourself, carefully copying the design onto clear glass which will be fired in Nikki’s studio later to make the paint permanent.
You will also decorate a second piece of glass using Sgraffito – a method of painting a layer of paint onto the glass and using different tools to scratch away the paint to reveal the coloured glass below, creating a very different feel and look to your artwork. This will also be taken away for firing.
At the end of the course, you will be able to choose which of your pieces you wish to have a leaded surround added, which Nikki will do in her studio after the firing process is done. All work will be returned to The Makers Mill for collection. Alternatively, you may wish to have your glass posted directly to you, for an additional postal charge
Please note there is a material charge of £35 payable to Nikki on the day.
This course is not suitable for pregnant women or nursing mothers and there will be a Health and Safety briefing, including the use of safety equipment, before the course starts. Please wear old clothes and sturdy boots and bring reading glasses for close up work if you need them.
Included in the cost of your workshop is lunch, tea and coffee throughout the day and cake in the afternoon.

From my Studio in Gilcrux, West Cumbria, I design and make beautiful stained glass windows for private homes and public buildings, as well as small bespoke panels for special occasions.
I also use my kiln to fuse and slump glass which can be incorporated into the more traditional work I do or designed to be decorative glass art pieces for the home.
Purchase our Gift Vouchers and they can use them on any of our workshops or gallery items.
